Cosmetic Dentistry

Having a magnificent smile is about more than just looking good - it’s about feeling good and taking the initiative for your health. Cosmetic dentistry has grown significantly in popularity over the last few years for those looking to improve their teeth’ function, health, and appearance. Whether it’s brightening up your smile with teeth whitening or filling missing teeth with crowns or veneers, there’s no issue that we can’t tackle.

Veneers

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain cemented onto your existing tooth and made to match your natural tooth shape and colour. Veneers are minimally invasive and can change the size, shape and colour of your teeth. Veneers can give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of with a natural look and feel.

How are veneers made?

We manufacture all veneers at our practice using Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) CAD/CAM technology. After taking impressions of your teeth, we will design the veneers and then stain and glaze them according to your natural dentition colour. The porcelain veneers are then bonded onto the front surface of the tooth.

Veneers are not only necessary for a single tooth but can be used to change the look of an entire smile. They require no additional care beyond regular brushing, flossing and visits to your dental hygienist.

What problems do veneers fix?

Veneers are best used on anterior teeth to fix cracks, gaps, chips, discolouration and other aesthetic problems. Other concerns they treat include:

  • Discoloured teeth from root canal treatment, excessive fluoride or exposure to certain drugs
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Irregularly-shaped teeth
  • Large gaps between teeth

Who is a candidate for veneers?

Those with good oral health, minor, aesthetic tooth problems or a damaged smile are good candidates for veneers.

Crowns are more suitable for patients with a worn-down bite and who suffer from severe attrition and abrasion on their teeth.

Candidates should not be missing any teeth to qualify for veneers. However, if you are missing teeth, click here to read about dental implants.

Our goal is to help clients achieve their perfect smiles. Contact us today to set up a consultation and discuss whether veneers would suit you.

Ceramic Crowns

A tooth that is still in good shape but has been damaged can be restored with the addition of a ceramic crown. Ceramic crowns are full caps placed over the remaining tooth structure to resemble a natural, healthy-looking tooth.

Ceramic or porcelain crowns are ideal for those with metal allergies and provide a much more natural colour match, and can be used for both front and back teeth.

When is a ceramic crown needed?

Ceramic crowns are used to repair extensive chips, cracks and broken teeth. They are also required when there is not enough natural tooth structure remaining or to replace old crowns. Other concerns where crowns are ideal include:

  • Restoring broken or damaged teeth
  • Protection of potentially weak teeth
  • Supporting teeth with large fillings
  • On top of dental implants
  • Covering for cosmetic purposes
  • Holding a bridge in place

Same-day restoration

At Melrose Dental, we pride ourselves on providing clients with efficient and high-quality care. Our in-house laboratory is equipped to create custom ceramic crowns using Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) CAD/CAM technology that can be readily available in the same visit. Thus, no downtime is needed for temporary restorations.

Crowns are milled, manufactured and characterised to your needs at the practice for you to enjoy your new smile as soon as possible confidently.

Our practitioner will start with a digital impression of your mouth. The ceramic crown is then designed on the CEREC machine and manufactured in the office while you wait. The entire process takes about 30 minutes.

Caring for your ceramic crown

Ceramic crowns typically last between five and fifteen years. The key to prolonging them is in how you care for your crowns. Although natural wear and tear are out of your control, there are a few habits you can avoid to make your crowns last:

  • Avoid biting your nails
  • Don’t chew ice
  • Avoid opening packaging with your teeth
  • Try not to grind your teeth

Crowns don’t require any special care beyond your typical good hygiene practices. Make sure to brush your teeth twice daily and floss.

CEREC

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC) is the new standard in modern high-tech dentistry. Due to recent advances in technology, CEREC now makes it possible to design, manufacture and characterise tooth replacements chair-side. As a result, we now have the ‘all-in-one’ dentist visit, which is more convenient and saves you time from multiple visits.

What does CEREC technology create?

CEREC technology uses impressions to create 3D ceramic restorations that fix several dental issues, including:

  • Crowns
  • Veneers
  • Bridges
  • Dentures
  • Dental implants
  • Inlays and onlays

Advantages of CEREC

CEREC is quickly becoming more widely used by dentists as it boasts many benefits that make cosmetic dentistry more accessible.

  • CEREC uses ceramic or porcelain exclusively, which means we offer metal-free materials solutions. These materials are also strong and appear more natural.
  • By using impressions, we can get a more accurate result.
  • The ability to conduct same-day restorations makes this technology convenient and efficient in treating dental concerns.

Our technology

Melrose Dental is proud to offer clients same-day service with our high-quality technology onsite. So whether you require crowns, veneers or dental implants, we can provide you with efficient service that need not take more than one visit.

We are all limited in time, but that shouldn’t take away from your oral health. Our procedure includes a digital impression taken with the CEREC BlueCam to create a 3D image of your tooth. The virtual model is then used to create a substitute for the tooth lost using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The entire process takes about 45 minutes.

Teeth Whitening

We all want to have a bright, white smile. Teeth whitening offers a fast, immediate and straightforward way to get that dazzling smile you desire. Moreover, the procedures are safe and affordable and worth it.

How teeth whitening works

Teeth whitening products make use of hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth successfully. The hydrogen peroxide works to oxidise molecules forming stains under the surface of the tooth enamel.

It’s essential to remember that not all of your teeth will whiten equally, and the best results come from continued maintenance. Grey and intrinsic stains and dental restorations are more difficult to whiten than yellow or brown extrinsic stains. Our practitioners will be able to examine your teeth and stains and advise the best way forward for treatment.

Types of teeth whitening

At Melrose Dental, we make use of two teeth whitening methods:

Phillips Zoom!

Zoom! is a scientifically advanced in-office teeth whitening procedure performed in the chair and only takes an hour and a half to complete. Phillips Zoom! uses the latest technology for teeth whitening procedures, and with the added benefit of an LED light, the process is safe, quick and more effective with immediate results. The LED light accelerates the whitening process, carried out by the chemical gel applied to the tooth surface. So, you get a whiter smile in just under an hour and a comfortable experience.

Tray Whitening

The Tray Whitening system is less expensive but just as effective, with the only difference being that the results aren’t immediate. Instead, a custom-made, invisible tray is designed for your teeth, and the whitening gel is applied and then inserted into your mouth. You can wear the tray during the day or night to activate the whitening process. Results are incredible but only become visible after seven to ten days.

Tray Whitening is ideal for continued maintenance of your white smile as you only need to stock up on a new tube of gel once you’ve run out. We recommend switching to the Tray Whitening method after undergoing an in-office whitening procedure with one of our practitioners.
